mw-atlas kickoff

The mw-atlas (Milky Way atlas) project will create the first three-dimensional, comprehensive atlas of our Galaxy. Within the scope of a European Research Council Synergy Grant, mw-atlas will revolutionize our understanding of the structure of the Milky Way over the next six years.

As scientific coordinator in this project, my first task was kicking off the collaboration with a meeting in Crete. Apart from discussing the big picture with all the connections between physical fields, we also talked more specifically about each sub-project and did some recreational activities.

I gave a presentation about my paper on inferring the local dark matter density from stellar dynamics.

Title: Local dark matter density from Gaia DR3 K-dwarfs using Gaussian processes & Variational Inference

Authors: Laurin Söding

When: 10th of October 2025

Where: Heraklion, Crete, Greece
